1965 Fender Super Reverb Black Panel Vintage Tube Amp AB763 with Ceramic Speakers

  

Up for sale, a 1965 Fender Super Reverb in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with a footswitch. This amp hails from early in the second full year of production, retaining the Pre-CBS Fender Elec Inst Co. Faceplate text and a quartet of desirable ceramic magnet speakers. Perfect for gigging situations and an ideal recording amplifier, the amp provides pristine Fender cleans and ideal headroom, cascading into smooth tube overdrive midway up the Volume dial. The reverb is lush and deep, and the tremolo has a nice pulse, with everything from swampy and slow to machine gun fast tremolo.

The circuit is extremely original, with all of the coveted blue molded Ajax tone caps intact in the preamp, an essential part of the sweet, musical nature of the Black Panel circuits. The original Schumacher transformers feature date codes spanning mid 1964-early'65, and all of the original CTS pots are present, with visible date codes also spanning 1964 to the first weeks of'65. The power supply has been professionally recapped, and the preamp is bone stock save for a pair of modern smaller electrolytic caps. A three-prong power cable has been installed too. The tube complement includes a majority of vintage valves in the preamp and rectifier, with a pair of tested and matched 6L6 power tubes, each with different branding.

In terms of the speakers, the amp boasts two of the original ceramic magnet CTS 10s with clean black frames and matching 1964 date stamps. The upper two speakers are also vintage and manufactured by CTS, dating to 1972. More balanced and full-sounding particularly in the bass register than the alnico speakers more commonly seen in a Super Reverb, these CTS ceramic drivers perfectly capture the nuance, sparkle, and power of the AB763 circuit.

Inside the cab, the original tube chart is present as well, taped over to "protect" the paper, with an "OD" date stamp which translates to April of 1965 as well as a Production Run #1 stamp. The original smooth black tolex and silver sparkle grillcloth are well-kept, with sparingly little aging of the grillcloth, only a couple tiny snags, and plenty of sparkle in the thread. There are also a couple very faint (and mostly removed) band logos on the sides of the cabinet.

The faceplate is notably clean, with all of the original witch hat knobs. The original nickel corners, sphinx glides (feet), chassis straps, chrome tilt-back legs, and raised "Fender" logo are present too. A modern two-button Reverb/Tremolo footswitch is included.
